Composition and release

This song was co-written by Tisdale and the Swedish production team Twin, the song was released as part of the Guilty Pleasure countdown on iTunes on June 23, 2009 in the United States and Canada.[2]

Critical reception

OK! magazine called the track "mature" and "feisty", crediting it for helping Guilty Pleasure become "a far cry from the tween-friendly pop of [Tisdale's] first album." [3] Other critics noted the track and its predecessor, "Masquerade", have contrasting themes.[4] Portrait Magazine explains that "While 'Masquerade' is about the willingness to conform, 'Overrated' details just why you should be true to yourself."[5]
